Coroner: Morphine Triggered boys death
By Mark Larabee Staff Write
OCEANSIDE Two-year-old Andrew Nelan died from a lack of oxygen to the brain, a direct result of morphine he was given after a routine operation at Tri-City Medical Center, a spokesman for the countys coroners office said Monday.
Andrew, son of Roger and Rebecca Nelan of Oceanside, died October 31 at Balboa Navel Hospital, four days after he was admitted to Tri-City for a tonsillectomy and an adenoidectomy.
The coroners office ruled the death accidental but said Monday that the boys death was a direct result of morphine he was given following the surgery. Medical Examiner Investigator Cal Vine said the morphine has a way of obstructing airways, Vine said. This was accidental death due to postoperative complications.
The Nelans have asked Tri-City Hospital District for $1.5 million in damages.
